Svaneti Mestia – Svaneti or Svanetia (Suania in ancient sources) (Georgianსვანეთი Svaneti) –  is a historic province in Georgia, in the northwestern part of the country. It is inhabited by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians. – is an ancient land locked in the Caucasus, so remote that it was never tamed by any ruler. Svaneti Mestia – Mestia – the main regional center of Zemo (Upper) Svaneti, is situated 456 km from Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi, and is 1,500 meters above sea level. It is the starting point for most trips to Svaneti. From the center of Mestia it is possible to hike up to the glaciers at the foot of mount Ushba, or take horses into the pristine alpine meadows.
